DF Book Cover Design Competition

Hi everyone,

After much deliberation and discussion I've decided on the next DF contest format and design brief (with some help). For this contest it's going to be staying quite simple, but with an open brief to encourage as many entrants as possible.

OK, the brief is as follows...
To design a book jacket cover for one of the selection:
  1. Animal Farm by George Orwell
  2. To kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  3. Macbeth by William Shakespeare
  4. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis
  5. The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
The publisher (Penguin) is keen to give the title a new lease of life with a striking. modern design to appeal to a new audience.

Entries: Covers can be typography, image manipulation, illustration, photography. The style is your choice. You can enter as many times and as many book covers as you like. Please try and place your cover entry onto the supplies book pix.

Rationale: A brief rationale to your design is required to explain the entry, no more than 60 words max.

Entry Format & Size:
All entries must be 1500px x 900px, consisting of 670x900 for back cover and 670x900 for front cover then 160x900 for the spine (view the book template). In addition to the concept if you can supply an image manipulation of the design on the book image this would be preferred.

Mandatories: The Penguin logo must be on the front cover, along with the book title and author's name.

Deadline: Friday 7th August, 5.00pm

Submissions: Like the last contest, entry is free to post and subject to members comments etc.

Final Entries: will be posted on a specific entry thread towards the last week of closing deadlines.

Prizes & Judging: Elliot Jay Stocks will be judging this contest!

You can find out more about Elliot and his work at: Elliot Jay Stocks » Home

Also excited to announce that there will be a prize fund for this contest, Berry is kindly putting forward £100 to the contest, so I have decided to match that, bringing the total prize fund to £200. There will be a £125 prize for the winner, £50 for second place and £25 for third place.

This is the biggest contest we have had on DF, so please help us make it a success by having a quick Tweet about it, or a short blog post, any links or promotion you can help us with will help attract new members to the forums!!

Thanks everyone,
Greg

I disagree. Imagine it you were entering the Roses or D&AD Best Book Cover catagory.

I think it will create an amazing gallety of a variety of work and styles and directions.

Judging is always difficult and subjective, but if you don't buy a lotto ticket, you'll never win.

I'm still musing over which book i want to do!

I've just quickly uploaded the PSD template if anyone is interested in downloading, it has the sizes set out and the small penguin logo ready to go - http://www.designforums.co.uk/book-template.psd

Looking forward to seeing the first entries, will post details about prizes and judging later today

Thanks,
Greg

PS- Edited out the MacBizzle, going to try and keep this thread for serious entries and contest feedback this time around

This will be the initial submissions thread, then a week before the deadline we'll setup the final entries thread, that seemed to work well for the last contest.

My only concern is the 'Iron Man" in the book isn't the same one as the Marvel Stan Lee 'Iron Man' as illustrated. The original book was called the Iron Man, later turned into an animated film called the iron Giant. Bit of confusion out there.
